Wood Repair

Wood repair comes in many forms. You may be looking to repair rotted wood, split wood or simply touch up wooden flooring that has aged, for example.

If you are looking to repair wood, depending on the scale of your project, it is always best done by a professional. Determine whether the wood needs to be replaced, or whether it is possible to carry out repairs (or partial replacement).

How to Repair Split Wood

If the damaged wood you are working with can be repaired rather than replaced, the next step is to assess which course of action will be best in reviving split wood. Smaller wood splits can be repaired using simple wood glue, clamping the split and allowing the glue to dry and adhere overnight.

For larger splits, we recommend the use of a wood filler, specifically an epoxy resin wood filler. For this kind of wood damage, a professional should be employed when repairing it.

Epoxy wood fillers are used to repair mainly wooden products, such as doors and windows, although they can be used for various other wooden structures that are susceptible to damage (for example wooden playgrounds).

Epoxy resin or resin is a material that has many different uses and is created by mixing two components that are matched to each other. As there is no water or solvent in resin wood fillers to evaporate, epoxy (resin) does not shrink. You can also use an electric sander on epoxy wood filler and paint over it after you’re done.

To repair split wood (or wood that has large cracks), the following steps can be applied (by a professional):

Step 1: Remove paint
Step 2: Remove all decay
Step 3: Measure moisture level (≤ 18%)
Step 4: Prime contact area with DRY FIX®
Step 5: Butter contact area with DRY FLEX® / BIO FLEX™
Step 6: Shape and finish repair
Step 7: Sand finished repair and apply paint

These steps can vary depending on the size and nature of wood damage.
